The Shriners Children’s Open is much more than a typical PGA Tour event. It serves as a powerful platform to raise awareness and funds for Shriners Hospitals, making a significant difference in the lives of countless children across North America. Held at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, this tournament showcases the incredible work of Shriners Hospitals and highlights the inspiring stories of its patients.

Partnering for a Purpose:
For 17 consecutive years, the PGA Tour has joined forces with Shriners Hospitals to organize the Shriners Children’s Open. This partnership aims to shed light on various pediatric injuries, orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and more. Mel Bower, the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer for Shriners Hospitals, emphasizes the significance of this tournament and its ability to reach a diverse audience each year.

Active Participation of Shriners Patients:
A distinguishing feature of the Shriners Children’s Open is the active involvement of Shriners patients. Twenty-three patients serve as ambassadors for the event, with many others offering support throughout the tournament. These ambassadors often take up the role of standard bearers, proudly displaying scores on the fairways. By participating in this tournament, they become part of a unique experience, walking alongside professional golfers and showcasing their indomitable spirit.

A Story of Triumph:
One such inspiring patient is Juan Diego, a 19-year-old from Honduras. After a devastating accident involving high-voltage wires left his hands disfigured, Juan Diego’s family sought help through Shriners Hospitals. Accepted in 2018 at Shriners Children Boston, he received specialized treatment for pediatric acute burns. During his time at the hospital, Juan Diego formed lasting connections and even found a best friend. Despite the obstacles he has faced, he remains determined to become a diplomat and help others in his country.

Selflessness on Display:
Every year, the Shriners Children’s Open presents an opportunity for children from various locations to represent Shriners as standard bearers. This year, 21 children had the honor of walking alongside professional golfers while keeping their scores. Additionally, the tournament hosted an Adaptive Golf Clinic, allowing Shriners patients to engage with professionals and enhance their golfing skills. The selflessness displayed by golfers like Lexi Thompson in interacting with these children truly embodies the spirit of the event and Shriners’ mission.

A Symbolic Victory:
The Shriners Children’s Open is one of a kind, as it blends the quests of professional golfers with the personal victories of Shriners patients. The resilience demonstrated by these children, who battle medical challenges every day, resonates with everyone involved in the tournament. There is a profound sense of empathy and appreciation for the importance of living one’s best life, instilling a powerful message of hope.

The Shriners Children’s Open is a testament to the transformative power of combining sports and philanthropy. Through this tournament, Shriners Hospitals can continue their vital work and give children the opportunity to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. Whether attending the event in person or watching from home, the Shriners Children’s Open offers a chance to witness the profound impact of compassion, determination, and love for others.
