Justin Fields Speaks Truth: The Bears’ Coaching Staff Falls Short

The Chicago Bears find themselves facing a nightmarish start to the NFL season, rapidly becoming a tale of missed opportunities and disappointment. After a dismal performance in the previous year, the football team had hopes of a remarkable turnaround this season. Unfortunately, reality has been far from kind, as their current 0-2 record paints a picture of a team in disarray.

Attempting to identify the root causes of their woes becomes an arduous task due to the multitude of issues plaguing the Bears. Quarterback Justin Fields, now in his third season, has failed to demonstrate the anticipated development and, disconcertingly, seems to be regressing. The coaching staff, led by Matt Eberflus, has repeatedly made questionable decisions, consistently placing the team in disadvantageous situations. The offensive coordinator, Luke Getsy, seems fixated on a baffling combination of screens and swing passes, while neglecting to leverage Fields’ dynamic running ability. Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Alan Williams has been absent since Week 1 for undisclosed personal reasons, leaving speculations about his employment status unanswered. In their first two games, the Bears’ defense has not managed a single takeaway and has only managed one sack.

It is disheartening to witness the Bears’ fall from grace, especially with the presence of a defensively-minded head coach and the immense talent of one of the most promising quarterbacks in the team’s history. Amidst this turmoil, Justin Fields faced the media on Wednesday with an unvarnished assessment of the team’s struggles. Surprisingly, he shouldered much of the blame himself, admitting to playing in a robotic manner. When questioned about the cause of this mechanical approach, Fields boldly pointed towards the coaching staff.

Field’s unfiltered quote during the press conference reflects his frustration: “I liked the times I felt like I was in a rhythm. Things I didn’t like. I felt like I was playing robotic. My goal this week is to say F it and just play football. That’s when I play my best when I am out there playing free. I am going to go out there and be me.” The quarterback firmly stated that he needs to stop overthinking and return to his natural playing style, acknowledging that the coaches had emphasized him staying in the pocket more this season. In their recent loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Fields carried the ball a mere four times for just three yards, a significant departure from his impressive rushing performance last year.

Despite Field’s candid remarks, Eberflus had no objections, affirming that he encourages honesty and wants Fields to find his rhythm and freedom on the field. This year was meant to mark a decisive turning point for Fields, potentially leading to a massive contract extension of around $200 million. However, his current performance places him among the bottom-ranked quarterbacks in the league, jeopardizing his chances of retaining his starting role. Fields firmly believes that the coaching staff’s approach has hindered his progress, an opinion shared by a considerable number of Bears fans.

Upon closer examination, one can discern that Fields’ struggles from the previous season concerned his ability to release the ball quickly while progressing through his reads. Getsy designed the offense with an emphasis on rapid throws to the sidelines and flat passes, inadvertently compromising what made Fields stand out in the first place. Fields, a formidable rushing quarterback with exceptional speed, possesses a strong arm for deep passes. The Bears missed the opportunity to build an offense centered around Fields’ unique skill set – designed runs, scrambles, and long bombs. While such a system may not have been flawless, it certainly would have been an improvement over their current approach. By attempting to fit Fields into a traditional West Coast-style offense, the Bears unintentionally limited his playmaking abilities and trapped him within his own thoughts.

The team attempted to bolster the offense by acquiring game-changing wide receiver D.J. Moore and trading for Chase Claypool, aiming to provide Fields with reliable targets. They also made key draft selections, such as RT Darnell Wright, and secured starting guard Nate Davis through free agency. These measures were meant to improve the team’s offensive prowess. Unfortunately, a series of injuries within the offensive line and a lack of involvement from the receivers have once again cast doubt on the offense’s effectiveness.

While it would have been preferable for these grievances to be resolved privately, it is understandable that Fields chose to share some of his frustrations with the media. If he fails to demonstrate significant improvement in the near future, he may find himself stripped of his starting position.

Up next for the Chicago Bears is a challenging match against the formidable Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. With starting left tackle Braxton Jones out due to injury, the Bears face an uphill battle against the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones, and Travis Kelce. It is difficult to envision a drastic improvement in the team’s fortunes this week.

Although the NFL season is in its early stages, the Bears’ prospects are rapidly slipping away. The mishandling of Justin Fields and the team’s ongoing struggles highlight a disheartening reality for Chicago. The road to redemption appears long and uncertain.
