Sahith Theegala’s exceptional performance in the Fortinet Championship has captured the attention of golf enthusiasts worldwide. The 25-year-old golfer took the lead with an impressive 8-under 64 on Friday, finishing the second round at 12-under, two strokes ahead of the competition.

While Theegala’s skill on the course was undeniable, some reporters seemed more interested in questioning his presence at the event. One journalist boldly asked, “Why are you playing this week?”

Theegala tactfully responded, dismissing the query as not a particularly insightful one. When the reporter followed up with a question regarding the quality of their inquiry, Theegala simply classified it as a lesser-tier question. Although seemingly harmless, the former Pepperdine golfer made it clear that he did not appreciate the line of questioning.

The Fortinet Championship is one of the seven events in the new FedEx Cup Fall series. These tournaments provide an opportunity for players who finished outside the top 50 of the FedEx Cup standings to earn valuable points towards securing their spots for the next season. Theegala finished the previous season with a respectable 31st rank in the FedEx Cup standings.

However, for this Southern California native, participating in this tournament was a no-brainer. Theegala expressed his love for California events and the West Coast swings, along with his fondness for the golf course’s unique poa annua grass. Additionally, the tournament holds sentimental value as it was one of the first sponsor invites he received, and it allows him to spend time with his friends and family, as one of his closest friends resides in Napa.

While some players choose to skip these fall events due to their high rankings, Theegala eagerly embraced the opportunity to continue competing. He revealed his inherent love for the game and his struggle to sit idle, highlighting his desire to play a tournament soon after narrowly missing out on the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Motivated to prove himself, Theegala’s strong performance in the Fortinet Championship places him in an excellent position to win his first PGA Tour event. With seven top-10 finishes already to his name this season, this Orange, California native is poised to make his mark on the tour. Additionally, golf enthusiasts can look forward to seeing Theegala tee off in the upcoming mixed event, the Grant Thornton Invitational, alongside Rose Zhang in Orlando.
