Two-time major winner Angel Cabrera is preparing to regain his freedom after spending an extended period incarcerated in prisons across Brazil and Argentina.

Angel Cabrera’s legal woes originated in 2016 when reports of domestic violence and multiple accusations surfaced. His ex-wife, Silva Rivadero, bravely came forward to accuse Cabrera of physical assault along with accompanying verbal threats. In addition, two ex-girlfriends, Micaela Escudero and Cecilia Torres Mana, also accused Cabrera of domestic violence, verbal abuse, and physical harm.

While facing these allegations, Cabrera faced a significant turning point in 2020 when he traveled to Akron, Ohio, to participate in the Senior Players Championship without notifying local authorities. This triggered a Red Notice issued by Interpol, alerting authorities worldwide to the presence of an international fugitive. Eventually, Cabrera was apprehended in Brazil, leading to his months-long incarceration at the Plácido de Sá Carvalho prison near Rio de Janeiro.

Having been extradited to Argentina, Cabrera faced further legal delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, he was sent to Cordoba’s Bouwer prison, where he faced charges of domestic violence, intimidation, and theft. Maintaining his innocence throughout the trial, Cabrera was found guilty of two counts of assault against Cecilia Torres Mana, resulting in a two-year sentence. The subsequent 18 months spent in Cordoba’s violent Carcel de Bouwer prison earned it the notorious moniker of ‘The Prison from Hell.’

In November 2022, another assault charge emerged, this time from Micaela Escudero. Cabrera faced yet another trial, leading to his conviction and an additional two years and four months of imprisonment. Notably, his sentences were to be served concurrently, further compounding his time behind bars.

As the year comes to a close, Angel Cabrera finds himself relocated to Monte Cristo, where he is scheduled to be released on Friday. Still, his legal battles are far from over, with a pending case involving his ex-wife, Silva Rivadero. In expressing his hopes for the future, Cabrera stated, “I just want to go home, be with my family, and start a new phase of my life.”

Angel Cabrera’s journey from professional golfer to incarcerated individual has been marked by legal turmoil and personal challenges. While his reputation has undoubtedly been tarnished, it is essential to remember that everyone deserves an opportunity for redemption and a chance to rebuild their life. As Cabrera prepares to step back into the world, it remains to be seen how he will navigate the aftermath of his troubled past.
